JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK CAMPGROUNDS
Joshua Tree National Park became a national
monument in 1936, then it was elevated to national park status
in 1994. As Southern California grew so did park
visitation; Joshua Tree now lies within a three-hour drive of
more than 18 million people. Joshua Tree
is nearly 800,000 acress large and is below 3,000 feet from sea
level. There is the Colorado Desert in which is the
eastern part of the park and features natural gardens of
creosote bush, ocotillo, and cholla cactus. The Mojave Desert,
with its higher, moister, and slightly cooler atmosphere,
makes this a special habitat of the Joshua tree itself. In
addition to Joshua tree forests, the western part of the park
also includes some of the most interesting geologic displays
found in California’s deserts.
